Put Those Pennies to Work

Yes. Pennies are still spendable.
The U.S. Mint plans to end new penny production in 2026, but every penny currently in circulation will remain legal tender.
You can still:
- Spend them
- Deposit them at WyHy
- Toss them into a fountain for good luck
- Cash them in for something more exciting than heavy change
The government is not recalling pennies, and businesses can continue accepting them indefinitely. So that dusty coffee can of coins still adds up.
What changes when pennies become harder to find?
Honestly, not a ton for most people.
- Digital payments: No change at all. Mobile wallets and debit cards already keep things exact down to the cent.
- Cash payments: Some stores may round the final total to the nearest five cents when pennies are scarce.
- Totals ending in 1 or 2 cents may round down
- Totals ending in 3 or 4 cents may round up
This rounding applies only to the final amount. Prices like $1.99 are sticking around. Retailers love those psychological price points way too much.
What should you do with your pennies now?
If you are not in the mood to roll coins at your kitchen table, you can skip the hassle and use a Coinstar kiosk. It is a quick way to turn that jar of pennies into something you can actually spend or save.
- Convert coins into cash
- Deposit the funds straight into your WyHy account
- Use it to boost your savings or pay down a balance
It is a simple way to lighten your pockets and strengthen your savings at the same time.
WyHy is here to help you make cents of it all
Money changes over time. It always has. What does not change is WyHy’s commitment to helping members understand their finances and make the most of every dollar and cent.
