Fraudsters create fake websites, counterfeit listings, and use deceptive tactics to lure individuals into providing personal and financial information. In today's digital age, online shopping has become incredibly convenient and accessible. With just a few clicks, you can explore a world of products and have them delivered to your doorstep. However, amidst the convenience, it's crucial to remain vigilant and cautious, especially when dealing with unknown websites.

Recently, scammers have been capitalizing on the popularity of brands like Hey Dude to lure unsuspecting customers into fraudulent schemes. Let's delve into the Hey Dude $20/Pair Shoe Sale Scam and understand how you can safeguard yourself against such traps.

Hey Dude: Comfortable Style, Rising Scams

Hey Dude is a renowned brand known for its comfortable and stylish footwear designed for both men and women. Unfortunately, its popularity has attracted the attention of scammers who seek to exploit innocent shoppers. The Hey Dude $20/Pair Shoe Sale Scam is a deceptive promotion claiming to offer Hey Dude shoes at an irresistible price point – just $20 per pair.

The Anatomy of the Scam

The Hey Dude $20/Pair Shoe Sale Scam typically unfolds across social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok. Scammers create fake accounts or pages that mimic Hey Dude's official profiles. These fraudulent posts often feature eye-catching ads or offers, complete with fake testimonials from supposed satisfied customers.

To add to the illusion of legitimacy, scammers use the official Hey Dude logo, images, and branding in their posts and advertisements. The goal is to make the fake promotion appear authentic and trustworthy.

How the Scam Works

Once a user falls for the scam and clicks on the enticing offer, they are directed to a counterfeit Hey Dude website. While the fake website may share visual similarities with the authentic one, the domain name is usually different. For example, instead of the legitimate heydude.com, scammers might employ domains like heydude.shoes or heydude.store.

The fraudulent website showcases a range of Hey Dude shoe models and colors, all priced at an unbelievably low $20 per pair. To complete the purchase, users are prompted to enter personal and payment details. However, this is where the trap is set.

After submitting their information, victims neither receive an order confirmation nor a tracking number. Instead, they find themselves charged more than the promised $20 per pair. Furthermore, scammers gain access to the victim's credit card information, which can be exploited for other fraudulent transactions.

The end result? Shoppers receive neither the shoes they ordered nor any means of recourse or communication. Refunds are out of the question, and the scammers behind the operation disappear into the digital shadows.

Protect Yourself: Stay Smart While Shopping

As online shoppers, your safety should be a top priority. To shield yourself from scams like the Hey Dude $20/Pair Shoe Sale Scam, consider the following precautions:

  • Verify the Source: Always double-check the legitimacy of a website or promotion before making a purchase. Look for official domain names and verified social media accounts.
  • Research Reviews: Genuine customer reviews can offer insights into a website's trustworthiness. Look for reviews on reputable platforms.
  • Secure Payment: Stick to secure payment methods, such as credit cards or trusted payment gateways, when making online purchases.
  • Check URLs: Carefully examine the website's URL for inconsistencies or variations from the official domains.
  • Be Skeptical of Unrealistic Offers: If an offer sounds too good to be true, it probably is. Exercise caution and be skeptical of overly discounted prices.

Remember, knowledge is your best defense against online scams. By staying informed and cautious, you can enjoy the convenience of online shopping while protecting yourself from potential pitfalls. If you ever come across suspicious offers or websites, don't hesitate to report them to the relevant authorities. Stay safe and shop smart!

Protecting Your Card Information: WyHy Puts Your Security First

In our increasingly digital world, the convenience of using debit and credit cards for transactions cannot be overstated. Not only does it eliminate the need to carry cash, but it also offers enhanced security features. However, it's essential to remain vigilant, as fraudsters continuously seek ways to gain access to your card information. At WyHy your security is our top priority, and we take several measures to protect your information during transactions.

Advanced Protocols for Card Security

WyHy has implemented robust protocols internally and collaborates closely with our card and ATM partners to ensure the security of your transactions. Here's how we safeguard your information:

EMV Chip Cards:

Over the past few years, the transition to EMV chip cards has significantly reduced the risk posed by magnetic stripe cards. EMV cards utilize encryption technology that makes it extremely challenging for fraudsters to clone your card or gather card information for online use. By leveraging this technology, we enhance the security of your transactions.

Card Management Services:

Our online banking portal offers convenient card management services that give you control over your cards. You can deactivate, reactivate, or put your card on hold as needed. Additionally, you have the option to set up text alerts for transactions and other account activity. These alerts enable you to receive notifications for withdrawals, deposits, and more, empowering you to stay informed and identify any suspicious activity quickly.

Ensuring ATM Security

We have implemented comprehensive security measures at our ATMs to ensure the utmost safety of your transactions. Here's what we do to protect you:

Anti-Skimmer Technology:

Our ATMs are equipped with cutting-edge anti-skimmer technology, which safeguards your card information and reduces the risk of card compromise. Skimmers are devices used by fraudsters to intercept card information during transactions. By implementing this advanced technology, we add an extra layer of security to your ATM experience.

Detecting and Reporting Skimmers:

To protect yourself, it's essential to be aware of the presence of skimmers. They can often be detected physically or visually. For example, at gas stations, look out for security tape (usually red) with the word "void" or if it has been cut. These signs may indicate the presence of a skimmer, and in such cases, it is advisable to report it to the gas station attendant and pay inside for your gas. Additionally, be cautious of any physical attachments on card readers that appear loose, crooked, or cover important elements. If you suspect a skimmer, notify the business immediately so they can address the issue. In case you have inadvertently used a compromised card reader, review your online banking portal to confirm the legitimacy of your transactions. You can also utilize our card management portal in online banking to disable the affected card.

Best Practices for Enhanced Security

While we prioritize your security, there are also actions you can take to further protect yourself. Here are some simple yet effective tips:

  • Choose Complex PIN Numbers: When setting a PIN for your debit card, opt for a complex combination that is difficult for fraudsters to guess. Avoid using easily recognizable patterns such as repeating numbers, sequential sequences, or numbers associated with personal information available online.
  • Ensure Secure Online Transactions: When making online transactions, be cautious and verify the web address for accuracy. Double-check that it starts with "https://" to indicate a secure connection that encrypts data in both directions. If following a link within an application, copy and open it in a formal web browser to ensure a secure connection.
  • Leverage Digital Wallets: Digital wallets, such as Apple Pay, Google Wallet, and Samsung Pay, offer an additional layer of security. These platforms enable you to load your debit and credit cards for secure online

Beware of Phishing and Smishing Scams: Protect Yourself as a WyHy Member

Cybercriminals are constantly devising new tactics to exploit unsuspecting individuals. As a valued member of WyHy, it is crucial to stay vigilant and protect yourself against phishing and smishing scams. These fraudulent activities aim to deceive you into revealing sensitive information, such as your account credentials or personal data. Here's what you need to know to keep your information secure.

What is Phishing?

Phishing is a fraudulent technique where cybercriminals impersonate legitimate entities, such as banks or credit unions, to trick individuals into divulging confidential information. This is typically done through deceptive emails, fake websites, or malicious attachments. The goal is to obtain login credentials, credit card details, or other sensitive information for financial gain.

Recognizing Phishing Attempts:

  • Be cautious of emails or messages requesting immediate action or claiming an urgent issue with your account.
  • Look out for grammatical errors, misspellings, or unusual email addresses that do not match the official domain.
  • Avoid clicking on suspicious links or attachments, as they may lead to fake websites designed to steal your information.

Protecting Yourself:

  • Never share personal information, such as account numbers, Social Security numbers, or login credentials, through email or text messages.
  • Double-check the legitimacy of the sender by contacting WyHy Credit Union directly through verified channels.
  • Ensure your devices and software are up to date with the latest security patches to minimize vulnerabilities.

What is Smishing?

Smishing is a form of phishing that specifically targets individuals through text messages (SMS) or other messaging platforms. Cybercriminals use enticing messages or urgent alerts to trick recipients into clicking on malicious links or disclosing sensitive information.

Identifying Smishing Attempts:

  • Be cautious of unexpected or suspicious text messages from unknown sources, especially those claiming to be from WyHy Credit Union.
  • Pay attention to unusual requests for personal information, financial details, or verification codes.
  • Watch out for messages with shortened URLs or misspelled website addresses, as they may redirect you to fraudulent sites.

Protecting Yourself:

  • Be skeptical of unsolicited messages and avoid clicking on any links or downloading attachments unless you are certain of their authenticity.
  • Be cautious when providing personal information over text messages, even if the request appears to be legitimate.
  • Report any suspected smishing attempts to WyHy Credit Union and your mobile service provider.

What you need to know about impersonation scams:

Successful credit union impersonation scams occur when members are convinced they’re communicating with an actual credit union representative via live voice call (Vishing), SMS text message (SMishing), or email (Phishing). But, in reality, they’re sharing confidential information with a scammer.

Fraudsters use spoofing techniques to make it appear as though the communication is from the institution so they can:

  • Steal your debit card information
  • Bypass security protections and access your account online; and
  • Solicit funds for fake payments

Look out for Vishing

Typically the scammer contacts the member using a spoofed phone number and posing as a credit union employee. The caller claims they need to discuss an important matter, but they must first confirm the member’s identity. The scammer is already on the credit union’s online banking website and informs the member they need to provide the PIN sent to the member’s phone or answer security questions. Since the caller says they’re from the credit union and the number on the Caller ID appears to confirm it, the member doesn’t hesitate to provide the requested information.

Vishing allows the scammer to use the information provided by the member to complete the login. They proceed to lock the member out of their account by changing the online banking password. The fraudster then transfers funds from the member’s account to their own temporary account before vanishing without a trace. The caller might even encourage the member to transfer funds to an external account claiming that the payment will be applied to a specific credit union loan.

Look out for Phishing and SMishing

Phishing and SMishing occur when a scammer sends a spoofed email or text message to a member, posing as a Credit Union employee and alerting them to suspicious debit card activity. The member is then urged to reply with account details, such as card numbers, CV2 codes, PINs, or other online account credentials. The scammer then uses this information to make unauthorized charges or access the member's account.

Protect Yourself

To protect yourself from these scams, never share private information via SMS text message and avoid clicking on hyperlinked phone numbers or links inside emails. Pause before providing personal data via voice calls you did not initiate, even if the caller ID reads WyHy. If someone contacts you and requests any of your account information do not share any information, hang up immediately, and call WyHy back directly at 800-442-2392.

WyHy will never contact you directly to request any account information, including your Social Security Number, Credit or Debit Card Numbers, Security Code or CVV, PIN, Address, Date of Birth, Online Banking Login Information, Verification Codes, or Passwords. If you receive a fraudulent email, phone call, or text impersonating WyHy, report it right away.

Remember, member vigilance is the most effective form of fraud prevention. Share this information with friends and family members who may be vulnerable to this type of fraud.
